Bella Zeng: Building Strong Bonds

BK8A2893As a Human Resources Officer at Jabil Huangpu, China, Bella Zeng understands the importance of engaging with Jabil’s employees. Representing her team at the 2015 Deliver Best Practices Competition, in the Human Development category, Bella presented a project that exemplified Jabil’s cultural emphasis on building strong bonds.

In order to support business growth, employees must have ongoing training. From a benchmarked study at other Jabil sites, including Shanghai and Wuxi, Zeng and her team found that there was no proper training for foundational indirect labor employees and current training was ineffective and unsustainable. They also found that only 20 percent of the training process had assessments.

Since training can increase people’s productivity and loyalty, her team set out to develop a systematic program that developed technical skill set, updated training materials, further trained internal trainers and developed a standardized training effectiveness evaluation process.

After implementation, they found that the program had a major impact on shareholder value because the satisfaction rate for customers improved. In addition, the turnover rate dropped significantly — by 46 percent.

“Training can really increase people’s loyalty to the company,” said Zeng during her presentation at the 2015 Deliver Best Practices Competition. “Our intentions were increase people’s capabilities and to reduce turnover.”

Steps to sustain and promote their solution include executing the program quarterly, holding regular trainer recertification and weekly program attendance tracking. In addition, the program is being replicated at the Shanghai and Wuxi sites.

Zeng’s favorite aspect of Jabil’s culture is doing the right thing, which reflected how her team achieved their goal of developing an effective and sustainable training program to ensure not only the success of our business, but also of Jabil’s employees.
