Cherry Liao: Putting Safety First by Doing What’s Right

Cherry Liao 2-480x260Cherry Liao was thrilled when she found out her team was advancing to the Global Competition. Not only was it her first appearance at the Deliver Best Practices final rounds, it was also her first time in the United States. She says she felt extremely proud to showcase her team’s project and was most excited about the chance to visit Jabil’s headquarters.

Liao, Assistant Manager at Wuxi Plastic, believes doing what’s right is creating a safe workplace for staff. Her team’s project, “Our Earth & Our Home,” focused on improving the sandblasting environment at their site.

Dust concentrations exceeding the national standard, are very harmful to human health and can cause coughing, chest pain and difficulty breathing. In order to reduce the site’s dust concentration, the team redesigned their machines by adding enclosed doors and a water bucket collection and using a seal to ensure the doors were tightly shut. They also enhanced their cleaning methods of the machine.

The team’s project reduced dust concentrations and received recognition for their impressive efforts from the Wuxi government, their customers and Jabil employees.

Since their project ended, the team has replicated it in other Jabil sites, including Chengdu, Tianjin and Suzhou. They also plan to apply their solutions to other machine models.

Liao says she would tell a younger version of herself to learn as much as you can, see the world as much as possible and don’t waste time on nonsense things. Sounds like she’s taking her own advice!
