Screen Shot 2016-04-13 at 11.20.35 AMEmbracing differences and maintaining inclusive cultures was the discussion that set the tone for the day when President & Chief Strategist of Monroe Consulting Group, Loretta Calvin, visited Jabil’s headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, to present during the latest installment of the Jabil Joules Power Hour series.

For her presentation, Loretta spoke before an audience of more than 40 employees about how diversity and inclusion go beyond just race and gender considerations. Taking a deeper dive into the subject, Loretta explained that other forms of diversity, including age, personal beliefs and disability, can also be subject to unconscious bias, especially in the workplace.

The presentation included an interactive session where audience members were asked to identify aspects that have changed in our world and the workplace, as well as three case studies that examined the way in which companies approached unconscious bias.

“My recommendation to organizations that are looking at the value of diversity is to take it slow,” said Calvin. “Make sure there is executive ownership, make sure that it’s a strategic link and make sure that, somehow, you start to talk about cultural competency, which means that people need to understand different cultures.”

In addition to her role at Monroe Consulting Group and as interim CEO of the YWCA Tampa Bay, Loretta also serves as the current Tampa Bay Chapter President of the Florida Diversity Council. In fact, Jabil recently sponsored a table at the Council’s Tampa Bay Women in’ Leadership Symposium.

“Securing your place at the table” was the focus of the Florida Diversity Council’s symposium and networking event, which featured a panel of speakers from diverse backgrounds and organizations including Tech Data, Raymond James Financial Services and Univision Communications, Inc. Personal branding, positioning yourself for the next big opportunity and finding and owning your voice were some of the topics addressed by panel members, in addition to becoming a person of influence and developing political savviness.

Jabil was honored to collaborate with the Florida Diversity Council and Loretta in creating dialogue surrounding diversity and inclusion in the workplace and enhancing networking opportunities for our employees.
